EUC7644R - Unify Endpoint Management Across Mobile and Desktop
Laptops continue to be an integral part of how people work. However, management practices and tools for PC environments, including Chrome, Mac, and Windows, have traditionally been different than those for mobile environments, such as Android, iOS, and BlackBerry. Users can work between devices like never before, and IT needs to keep up. The fragmentation of administrative and maintenance processes has decreased IT productivity and led to inconsistent security policies, app delivery and reporting–until now. PC and mobile platforms are converging and IT administrators can now support all user endpoints, including laptops, with a unified endpoint management (UEM) from AirWatch.

HBC7646 - St. John's University Leverages vCloud Air Disaster Recovery for Its Critical ERP System, Banner
As a result of findings from an internal risk assessment, the St. John's University IT team was challenged to implement disaster recovery for the university's critical ERP system, Banner, under significantly shortened timelines. Although the front-end services were hosted on a VMware virtualization platform, the back-end Oracle database resided on a physical Solaris environment. In addition, 12 supporting application services needed to be integrated into the overall Banner architecture, hosted on a mixture of virtual and physical environments (approximately 30 servers). Using the VMware vCloud Air suite of services, St. John's was able to build and test a DR solution in approximately 10 weeks. Virtual infrastructure was set to replicate on a 4-hour interval to the DRaaS environment. This environment was connected to a set of physical servers located in the vCloud Air Virtual Private Cloud (VPC). Using Rackware technology, physical Windows servers were replicated within a similar timeframe from the St. John's on-premises environment to the vCloud environment. Load balancing and domain services were built directly within the VPC to support the initiative. The Oracle database was replicated across through a series of Rsync scripts from the Solaris platform to a Linux environment within the VPC twice daily, providing a RPO of 12 hours. Through this process, all applications were able to be verified, tested, and working in the event of a disaster situation.

INF7578 - A Cloud Service Provider's Success Story: Adoption of vSphere with Operations Management
Clouditalia's decision to exclusively adopt the VMware cloud stack is still proving a winner. This is in thanks to the integration of products - including direct contact with customers (vCloud Director), management infrastructure (vCenter), and analysis and prediction tools (vRealize Operations and vRealize Log Insight). As a cloud service provider, we must make difficult sizing choices in advance to avoid clipping the wings of those customers who have frequent and rapid expansion needs. vRealize Operations enables us to check the duration of our investment. We can review the medium- to long-term future by comparing revenues from this extension, without having to exaggerate or underrate them. Using this tool to analyze the root cause gives us the opportunity to optimize structure and stop repeating mistakes that lead to anything from individual customer outages to global outages. Last, but certainly not least, is optimization. Thanks to vRealize Operations, we are able to better communicate with our customers. This provides us with needed data so we can confidently notify customers who are wasting resources as well as those who are underpowered. Clouditalia owes much of its success to the ability to attend to every customer, regardless of the size of his or her business. Much of the credit is due to vSphere with Operations Management. Customers recognize this value in Clouditalia and appreciate that, unlike with other larger groups, they aren't treated in "default mode" as a mere number.

SDDC7609-QT - How to Respond to the "Bring Your Own Data Center" Trend
Research has shown that business units don't always wait any more until their IT department is finally able to deliver infrastructure as a service; instead they buy it directly themselves. Business units can use their own virtual data center from the cloud: Bring Your Own Data Center (BYODC). They are increasingly turning to Amazon Web Services, Azure, vCloud Air, and other public cloud platforms to run their workloads. Most of the time this starts with development and test workloads, but increasingly occurs for production workloads as well. This causes challenges for the IT department regarding security, management, compliance, and costs. Micro-segmentation is foundational to securing the software-defined data center, as it is paramount in maintaining and enhancing the security posture of dynamic workloads. Micro-segmentation allows automated and “baked-in” security, enabling significant security benefits as organizations move to an increasingly fine-grained segmentation approach for data-center security (e.g., Zero-Trust Architecture). This method wraps security controls around much smaller groups of resources – often down to a small group of resources or individual virtual machines. The inherent security and automation capabilities of the NSX platform makes micro-segmentation operationally feasible in the enterprise data center for the first time. But as with any new technology, one must understand how micro-segmentation fits into their current data center security architecture. This session will delve into how different micro-segmentation design patterns enabled by VMware NSX enhances your data center security posture, and will present the results of micro-segmentation benchmarking performed by an independent risk management & compliance auditing organization Coalfire Systems, Inc.

SEC9968-SPO - Automate Check Point vSEC Advanced Security with NSX
In the world of the Software-Defined Data Center, there is a need to protect traffic between virtual machines from laterally moving threats. Perimeter-based security solutions are very effective in protecting North-South traffic moving into and out of the data center. However, the same security approaches used for perimeter security are not able to keep pace with dynamic changes inherent in a virtualized datacenter. In order to optimize the benefits of the Software-Defined Data Center, security requirements must be addressed in an automated, integrated manner without impacting features or performance. Join us to learn about real-life lessons from the trenches of Check Point vSEC and VMware NSX based customers who are paving the way to fully realize the benefits of a Software Define Datacenter – without compromising on their security. See a live demo of how seamless and easy it is to auto-provision security, detect and quarantine infected machines and centrally manage your virtual and physical environments.

STO8179R - Understanding the Availability Features of Virtual SAN
Application uptime and resiliency to failure are key factors with any hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) storage solution. Before choosing a platform, it is important to understand its ability to recover from issues such as disk, host, and even entire site failures. This session will focus specifically on the availability features of VMware Virtual SAN. It is a technical discussion that begins with a quick explanation of how Virtual SAN stores virtual machine objects such as configuration (VMX) files and virtual disk (VMDK) files. Next, we will take a look at storage policy-based management (SPBM) as this is the primary method for configuring and managing the levels of resiliency for virtual machine objects. We will examine the differences between and requirements for RAID-1 mirroring and RAID-5/6 erasure coding rules in Virtual SAN storage policies and how these rules affect the number and placement of objects. Next, we will provide technical details around Virtual SAN fault domains and stretched clusters. The session will finish with some notes on Virtual SAN data protection using VMware vSphere Replication and VMware vSphere Data Protection while leaving sufficient time for Q&A with the speakers.

STO9967-SPO - Rethinking Data Protection: The Rise of Hyperconverged Infrastructure and Built-in Backup and Disaster Recovery
Data protection is a perennial problem for IT. Even with all of the data protection software and hardware solutions available, improving backup and disaster recovery is still a top priority for just about every IT team. What if there was a better way? What if you could back up a 1TB VM in 60 seconds or less, and recover in seconds? What if you could recover your entire data center from another location in minutes? And what if you could do all of this while eliminating the need for third-party backup solutions all together? Solving data protection requires a total rethinking of the traditional approach. Join this session to learn how hyperconverged infrastructure is leading the way. A live demo and customer testimonials will highlight SimpliVity capabilities, along with an open Q&A with SimpliVity head of product strategy. Attendees will learn more about: •How hyperconverged infrastructure addresses data protection modernization •How data protection in SimpliVity hyperconverged infrastructure compares with traditional backup and disaster recovery solutions •How SimpliVity global data deduplication introduces data efficiency that not only reduces capacity and bandwidth requirements for local and remote backups, but also significantly improves application performance

VIRT9034 - Oracle Databases Licensing on a Hyper-Converged Platform
Advances in technology now have IT organizations evaluating hyper-converged solutions in lieu of building systems. Hyper-converged solutions integrate computers, networking, virtualization, flash storage, and management in one platform that accelerates deployment. In this session, we evaluate each component layer of these new hyper-converged technologies per the Oracle contract, with an eye to reducing rather than increasing database licensing quantities. We drill down on VMware Corporation's new CPU affinity statement, present the inverse relationship of DR reliability and licensing liability, point to relevant content in the May 2016 House of Brick/EMC/VMware database licensing white paper, and discuss the ramifications of the October 2015 Mars vs. Oracle lawsuit. Attending this session will give IT organizations a clear roadmap in how to manage database licensing, and next steps in the case additional resources are needed. The session concludes with a 15-minute block dedicated to answering your questions. Renowned Oracle Database licensing consultancy House of Brick hosts this session with co-presenter EMC. DBAs and others attending this session will have the knowledge to apply licensing guidelines on hyper-converged platforms like the VCE Vblock 740.
